By going out on dates and getting to know you better, he realized that he didn't feel as attracted and compatible with you as he originally thought he would. Instead of telling you he simply didn't feel the attraction needed for a further relationship, he chose to passively end things with you---dropping out of sight, no phone calls, your contacts aren't returned. There is nothing you can do but accept that he did not have the feelings that you did, and that pursuing him any further is not in your best interest. When you run into him at work, keep the discussions job related and as brief as possible.
