It's difficult to give a specific reason for this, since there are a number of ways a DHCP lease could become invalid. To help you understand the problem, I'll explain what a DHCP lease is, and then you can work forward from that knowledge.
Many providers of home internet service use a technology called Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol, or DHCP. Basically what this means is that when you turn on your computer and it's starting up it sends out a broadcast to any computer that cares to respond saying, effectively, "Hi! Here I am! .... Um, who am I?" A DHCP server at your service provider will respond to this saying "Here's an IP address you can use, and here is the address of your local gateway and some DNS servers you can use. You can use these for X seconds before you have to check back with me." (X is usually about a day, but can be configured to be some other length of time.)
The advantage is that you don't really need to know much to set up networking on such a computer; it's all handled behind the scenes for you.
Now, if something goes wrong with the DHCP server, you won't get an IP address, and so your network won't work. Also, if your DHCP lease expires (it's been more than the length of time the server initially told you you could have that IP address), the lease becomes invalid. Your computer SHOULD at this point contact the server again to request a renewal of the lease, but if this doesn't happen for any reason, you wind up with an expired and invalid lease. The server will think you're not using the address anymore, and may try to give it to some other computer.
