Shut down the computer for at least 10 to 15 minutes. That should delete any temporary files in Ram then try rebooting.

Secondly, disconnect everything from the iMac except the keyboard. You should use the ORIGINAL Apple keyboard that came with the computer for the most effective troubleshooting. Reboot and see if that helps.

Thirdly, if you have an Install/Utility DVD that came with your computer NEW then start up from it and select the "Utility"'s menu and open "Disk Utility" and and select "Repair disk".

Do not use the "Repair Permissions" on the DVD as the later OS versions on your boot disk have been updated with the Apple Updates and the DVD of course does not get updated and does not have the latest version for the OS updates and is not going to be able to work right.

If it came with DVD's then you should have a "Hardware" checker DVD you can use to check your hardware for any issues.

If you have 10.7 and above then reboot into the Repair partition and do the same. You should be able to use the "Repair Permissions" on the Repair Partition.

If it still doesn't work then make sure you have at least 10 to 20 gigs of free space on your drive. The operating system needs at least that much to use as virtual memory to store stuff that is used fairly often and to expand and use all the Software Updates from Apple and other 3rd party company's in the background.

If you still can't get it to work then you may have to buy a disk repair utility like DiskWarrior, TechTool Pro or something similar.

Some cause's are loose Ram boards that were recently installed, hard drive starting to die, USB peripherals going bad, etc.
