Breathing into a paper bag is a reliable way to cope with panic attacks, but only in some cases. Breathing into a paper bag can help the individual get their breathing under control if they are hyperventilating but it won't do much otherwise.

Why do people with anxiety blow into paper bags?

When someone has a panic or anxiety attack, it's too easy to hyperventilate. This just aggravates the condition. By breathing into a paper bag, the person is forced to rebreathe some of his/her own carbon dioxide, preventing hyperventilation and easing some of the symptoms of the attack.

Why does breathing into a paper bag decrease rate of respiration?

B/C people who do this are hyperventilating and expelling too much Carbon Dioxide from their blood. Breathing into a paper bag helps them HYPOventilate to the point where they're calmed. You exhale 17% oxygen, 4% carbon dioxide, 89% nitrogen. The CO2 helps slow the breathing by balancing the right amount of CO2 back into the blood.

Why breathe into bag when having a panic attack?

When someone hyperventilates (over breathing), although it may feel to that person as if they are not getting enough oxygen, this is not true. They are getting enough oxygen, but breathing out too much Carbon Dioxide, upsetting the normal body chemistry and causing some unpleasant side effects. The theory behind breathing into a paper bag is to breathe back in some of the excessive amounts of carbon dioxide being breathed out, but this should only be used if certain that the over breathing is only caused by anxiety/stress. Hyperventilation can occur as a result of underlying medical problems, and if this is the case, breathing into a paper bag can make the condition worse. A person should also only use the bag for short periods, alternating between breathing with the bag for about 10 seconds and then without for 15 seconds. However, there is conflicting views over the use of a paper bag and many sources say that it is no longer recommended. The best way to help a person who is hyperventilating is to calm them down. This can be done by getting them to count from 100 backwards or talking about something trivial that will take their mind off their panic, but not make them more stressed. This also works as it is very difficult to hyperventilate and talk at the same time! Concentrating on breathing patterns will also help, a person who is hyperventilating will usually breathe in quickly and sharply and not spend enough time breathing out, so forcing themselves to slow their breathing down and concentrate on long exhalation will help. If you are with a person who is hyperventilating be kind but firm - make them talk to you and control their breathing, counting with them while they breathe can also help (breathe in for 3 counts and out for 4 etc)

Why do people breathe in carbon dioxide when they are hyperventilating?

Actually, when people hyperventilate, they loose carbon dioxide. The old way of treating a person who is hyperventilating is to breathe into a paper bag. This is no longer recommended, unless your doctor tells you to do so. Hyperventilation causes your body to expel too much carbon dioxide and that can change the pH level in the blood and cause metabolic problems. Since hyperventilation is mostly a psychological problem than a physiological problem, the best treatment is to is to stay calm and practice breathing slowly and not too deeply.

Does breathing into a paper bag increase a person's breathing rate?

yes

How can you control your anger so you could breathe better and not to fall because of your breathing problems and when you dont know what your problem is and when you cant breathe when your angry?

Try to go for a walk as much as it´s possible. You will see, you won´t get angry that fast. If it happens that you can´t breathe like you should, make sure you have a paper bag or a plastic bag with you. When you start feeling dizzy in your head, because of wrong breathing, you have to much oxygen in your blood. When you breathe into the bag for a short time, you breathe again carbon dioxine, which reduces the oxygen in your blood and makes you feel better. Please, make sure you only breathe a couple of times into the bag!!!

What change in breathing rate occurs after breathing into a bag?

They breathe too much oxygen. This causes light-headedness. Breathe slowly for awhile or breathe into a paper bag to raise your CO2 .
