I have had some experience buying tanzanite on eBay, so I think I have an idea. First off, the darker the color the more valuable, but not too dark. It is a blue-violet variety, and displays both in some way normally. Blue ones seem to be rarer and fetch higher prices than mostly violet ones, but I have run into a particular stone that clearly displays both, depending on which side you are viewing it. I value this property higher than other factors, so one could say it is a personalized value system. One VERY important to keep in mind though, especially if you are buying stones over the internet, is to make sure the stone does not have windows! This means that the stone is poorly cut, and you can see right through the center of it. This is the most prevalent feature of stones that are sold on the Internet, and is a major factor when pricing. If it is cheap, but looks beautiful and big, it either has 10 days on eBay until it sells, or it is poorly cut, and others have recognized this, and have not offered to buy it. But even still, it seems tanzanite has become so coveted, that high prices are offered for even poor quality. I have done so in a few cases, and was not disappointed the least bit. It is what it is, and I mostly got what I paid for in the end. All in all, I feel that with buying gemstones, you have to take a very personal approach with it. If it is out of your budget, but looks gorgeous, keep looking. Your bound to find a cheaper stone with more qualities YOU like. And if you are totally new to buying stones, just keep looking around, and get a feel for what the market of tanzanite has to offer. Best of luck, and happy hunting! (Better hurry though) ;-)
