Within the television menu there is a setting called "aspect ratio" or something similar. The symptom described sounds like the aspect ratio adjustment has been set incorrectly for the input being used. There are normally three or four different options to choose from. Usually, the setting marked as "full screen" or similar will be the right one. Try each of them to see which works for you particular set up.
