My '88 does the same thing. I found that it was the anti-lok braking system going through the paces with the ecm. It's done it since I've had it, and continues to do so. I have not had any problems and the anti-lok works fine.

That is a condition known as (morning sickness) which is a early stage of trans failure as far as i know the only solution is replacement of the transmission but try a junkyard bcuz some s10s have the same one and u can prob get it relatively cheap.

if it is the cable under the top . i have just reached in to the release and pull the spring forward. it is just a lever. pull forward and you should be ok
