ALWAYS get advice from your healthcare professionals before starting something new or stopping something you usually do. I am not an enemy of antihistamines; they work wonders if used correctly. I have misused them in the past... not intentionally, but by taking one kind of OTC med or another with some combination of OTHER OTC med's, not fully realizing that many contained antihistamines and should not have been combined.
So if you are going to take any kind of medication, keep your wits about you and ALWAYS keep your doctor in the loop. That said, I am a big fan of what is called Neti Pot. This is a method of cleansing the sinus cavity that comes from India. There are a few commercial models available. The neti pot is much like an Alladin's Lamp. You put in a saline solution at or near room temperature, and pour it through the sinuses. If it sounds daunting, have no fear. Follow directions and you will find that this method, while it won't cure a cold, will clean the sinuses in a most refreshing way. It can be used several times a day, since no materials of any consequence enter the body. Materials that enflame or irritate the sinuses are flushed away. Along with a responsible use of OTC med's the neti pot can really help keep your nose clear while you are getting better.
