This sounds like one of two things are going on. First, if cookies are turned off (disallowed), then this could occur because that is how many sites keep track of who you are. Second, it could be that your computer's clock is not set correctly. Specifically, check the date to insure that it is showing the correct date and year.

To deal with the first issue (the cookies), you need to go to Control Panel and double-click on internet Options. On the window that appears, click on the Privacy tab and then click on the Default button on that page if it is not already greyed out. At that point, click on the Security tab and click on the Default Level button toward the bottom of the page. Finally, click on the Advanced tab and click on the button labelled Restore advanced settings. After this, click on OK. If you have either Internet Explorer or Google Chrome open, close all browser windows that you have open, wait about ten seconds, then reopen the browser and try to log in again. If it works, then you're done.

If the options that we just checked and potentially reset to default did not fix the issue, then make sure that the system clock is showing the proper date and time. The reason being that if your clock is either running ahead or behind the website that is trying to be accessed, it will cause problems with the security scheme that the webpage is trying to use, such as expiration of the login after 10 minutes of inactivity (such as is the case with banking websites). If the clock is reading some strange date such as January 1, 2000, then chances are that the CMOS battery has failed inside your computer and needs to be replaced. This is a simple battery that can be picked up for just a few dollars at Radio Shack. However, if you do not know where the battery is, how to replace it, or how to properly reset the BIOS settings, then chances are you should have a professional computer repair technician take care of it for you. It takes only a couple of minutes, so he will probably charge you only for the battery. After that, your clock should stay right on target.

Now let me take a moment to talk about cookies and the bad rap they have gotten over the years. Years ago, the news reports (as they always do) sensationalized an issue about computers that they did not understand, specifically these "evil" files on all computers called cookies. The various news stories claimed that they could be used for nefarious purposes and that they could lead to infections, hacking attempts, or other such things. When I heard all this, I laughed and this is why: cookies are nothing more than Post-It Notes that websites leave for themselves to remember who you are, what is in your shopping cart, what movies or actors you have investigated, or other such things. They are text files that are encrypted and encoded so that only the website that created the cookies can access the information contained within them. A text file cannot infect your computer no more than a Post-It Note you leave on the bottom of your computer to remind you to pick up milk and bread on the way home from work can steal your car. There are some cookies called "tracking cookies" that many antimalware and antivirus programs can and usually do sweep away but they are not of any concern either. Those so-called tracking cookies are cookies set by the various advertisements that one sees all over sites such as YouTube, CNN, or other such places. They are once again only reminders to the advertisement applets on those pages as to what ads you have seen and whether you clicked on any of their buttons or went to one of their links from within the ad or other such things. Once again, they are harmless and not of any major concern. In fact, if you want to read more about this, I have an article up on my business website regarding cookies, which can be found at http://www.bdcusa.com/cookies.html.

I hope all this helps. If you have any other questions, feel free to drop me a line.
