its just more and less light same person if its dark u need the flash so u are not blacked out beaus no light is bouncing off u into the camera with out it and no light means black basically u need light to see and so does ur camera and the flash provides that light when u need it its always u

Depends on what you plan to do with the scanned picture. If you are sending via email or posting on a website then 800x600 would be fine. If you plan on editing then as high as you can without killing your machine. The higher the resolution the bigger the file and some PCs really chew on those large files for a while
