If the sparks came out of the socket, you should call an electrician. If the sparks came from the plug (the wire at the plug would be scorched or burned), the plug should be replaced. You can buy a similar plug at a hardware store, cut off the old plug, strip away some of the insulation covering the wires, and install the new plug using only a wire stripper/cutter and a screw driver. Or you could contact a local handy man to replace the plug for you.
If you have sparks coming out of this pipe call a licensed electrician or your local building inspector right away.

Where the wires attach to the handle probably became frayed and touched causing a short.
It is not necessary to have an electrician do the electrical work in a house, but it is highly advised. Electricians have the equipment and knowledge necessary to ensure that there is little to no chance of electrical fires, sparks, shorts, or problems.
Yes. Electricity will arc across the small gap as it tries to continue supplying power to the device.
My favorite Nicholas Sparks book is A Walk to Remember because it teaches you about the Lord. I am a very Godly woman, so this book really touched my soul. :) Edit- My favorite is The Lucky One because it has a Great plot and a very satisfying ending.

Disconnect the circuit breaker or fuse to that outlet. Then disable or replace the outlet. This is fairly easy and you can buy a new outlet at a home improvement store for a couple of bucks. If you are not comfortable working with these sorts of things call an electrician.
No. Sparks itself is not energy. Sparks come from fire. Fire is energy, but not the things that come of it (sparks).
