Then your body is telling you something is wrong; generally speaking that pain description could be indicative of a thousand different problems. You should probobly see a doctor. It could be something serious, or you could of had just broken it, and you don't know about it.

If your thumb hurts when you put ice on your thrown out shoulder, you should protect your thumb from the cold ice. Put on a glove or wrap a towel around your thumb. If your thumb hurts from simply holding the ice at a certain angle, then try to attach the ice to your shoulder with a sling.

Pull the butt of the stock firmly into the pocket of your shoulder. If the butt is free to move, when the gun fires, it will be moving at speed when it hits (and hurts) your shoulder. However, when it is pulled snugly against your shoulder, it will push, but not hit.
It was my right shoulder one. I was standing with feet underneath car with door open and fell backwards onto shoulder. still hurts and that was 10 years ago. would advise not to imitate this stunt.
