Troops of the 6th, 7th and 9th division of the AIF (Australian Air Force) were sent to the Middle East and half of the Australian navy went to the Mediterranean to assist the British war effort. Australia also fought in Papua New Guinea, the Kokoda Trail, although Australia was occupying Papua New guinea so it was therefore part of Austrlia at the time.
