In the 1970's and 80's Alfa's build quality was very poor, and as such they got a poor reputation for reliability, which is gradually being got rid of, some of the newer models come very highly in reliability surveys. Engine wise, Opel/ Vauxhall purchase their engines from Fiat/ Alfa group, the electronics are by Magneti Mareli (another Fiat / Alfa group company), who supply Audi and BMW too. I think the dealer network doesn't help, as they are a little poor. Most owners use a good independent where the service is better.
