The area around the Nile River Delta had some of the world's most naturally fertile soil. Unfortunately, in recent years the Egyptian government has dammed the Nile river for electricity production, preventing the river from flooding and depositing humus on it's shores. When the Nile did flood and recede, the fertility index of the soil around went from around a 10 to a 13

There are several ecosystems that have very fertile soils. Some of the most important include the soils of the grasslands (prairies, steppes) and floodplain soils.

The US Midwest is called the nation's breadbasket because of its fertile grassland soils. Because perennial grasses are deep rooted and their roots die and are replaced every year or two, a lot of rich organic matter is added to it each year. Over the centuries, it makes extremely fertile soil.

Floodplains are fertile for a different reason. Flood waters carry sediments washed from soils upstream. When they are deposited in the floodplain, they add whatever nutrients they carry to the floodplain, replenishing farmlands along the river.
