They are adapted to steep and rocky habitats as their main form of defence against predators.

The Short-eared rock wallaby and the Nabarlek (Little rock wallaby) are found across the Top End and in far north Western Australia, while the Monjon, or Warabi, which is the smallest of the rock wallabies, is found within a small area of north Western Australia. Rothschild's rock wallaby is found in the Pilbara and Hamersley Range areas of Western Australia. The Black-flanked wallaby is found in isolated patches through arid Western Australia and central Australia, while the Yello-footed rock wallaby is found in both the Flinders Ranges of South Australia and a small area of central western Queensland.
Numerous species of rock wallaby are found through northeastern Queensland in both the mountainous countryside of the Great Dividing Range and the tablelands. the Brushtailed rock wallaby is common through eastern New South Wales and southern Queensland.

Many species of wallaby live in bushland, but there are also numerous varieties especially suited to rocky hillsides.
