Neurotransmitters are checmials in the brain that help promote brain health by participating in the process of sending signals to various parts of the brain to function appropriately. When neurotransmitters are not functioning appropriately, medication is often used such as Prozac or Paxil. Medication helps neurotransmitters function more adequately.

There are six prominent or most commonly discussed neurotransmitters in the brain known as:

  1. Serotonin (very important chemical in the brain regulating depression and mood)
  2. Dopamine (a chemical that regulates movement)
  3. Noradrenalin (a chemical involved with memory and learning)
  4. Aceytlcholine (muscle movement)
  5. Adrenaline (fight-or-flight response from the nervous system)
  6. G.A.B.A. (stops the movement of nerve impulses)

Receptors for the various neurotransmitters are located on both the presynaptic and postsynaptic nerve terminals of the neuron.

Are DNA and RNA neurotransmitters?

No. Neurotransmitters are located in the brain. DNA & RNA are related to cell information and replication.

Based on the main neurotransmitters the sympathetic nervous system can be classified as what-?

These are motor neurons located in the ganglia of the PNS

What do neurotransmitters open?

Neurotransmitters act on synapses.

Where are specialized second order neurons of the sympathetic nervous system that release neurotransmitters into the bloodstream located?

In the adrenal glands

How is transmission across the synapse halted?

There are three ways to end chemical signaling across a synapse. In some cases, the neurotransmitter molecules simply diffuse away from the synapse. In others, enzymes located in the synaptic gap deactivate the neurotransmitters. Finally, neurotransmitters are taken up by the releasing neuron in a process known as reuptake.

What is the relationship between drugs and the transmission of neurotransmitters?

The relationship between drugs an the transmission of neurotransmitters is that the drugs can interfere with the work of the neurotransmitters.

What does an axon release when an impulse reaches the end of it?

Neurotransmitters to the synapse and the neurotransmitters bind with the receptors releasing the second messengers.

What part of a neuron contains neurotransmitters?

Neurotransmitters are used to send messages from cell to cell, usually neuron to neuron. Neurotransmitters are released from the pre-synapse, which is at the axon terminus. These neurotransmitters are picked up by the post-synapse on the receiving cell. These post-synapses are located on structures called dendrites or on the cell body.
