remove the gauge cluster...attatched to the back are the bulbs...read up on it a manual will help with diagnosis and repair, and a shop manual should be available at the local library in the reference section for FREE, make copies of the right pages, good luck...:)

Perhaps something in the gear shift that turns on the lights when in reverse position.
There are plastic bulb covers on either side of the license plate. Unscrew the screws and take the covers off. From there you can insert new bulbs.
To replace the rear bulb in a Toyota 4Runner remove the plastic covers located in the trunk. Taking off the plastic covers will reveal the taillight housing and bulbs. Replace the bulbs.
There is a switch on the shifter or trans that turns on the lights when the vehicle is placed in reverse, it is out of adjustment or faulty. And don't forget the bulbs or fuses as a cause.

The bulbs are located for the headlights under the hood of the car.
Use your test light to make sure there is power coming through the fuse and through the switch. If so, there's a broken connection somewhere. Also check the ground at the taillight sockets. A bad ground can drive you absolutely buggers.
Brake bulbs. You might need to replace them. It just happened to mine and it was tricky to do it. To take the brake lights you need to pull them from the sides, there is a small piece that would come out easily and then you can just take the screws out.
