Yes it does fit the 1987 model. The body style ran from 1981-1994 so any of those years (1/2ton,3/4 ton,1 ton) will fit each other.
Remove the black plastic panel in the center of the dash. Pretty easy, you can see the screws around the perimiter. Carefully pull it off. The connector to the indicator light for the 4WD may be difficult to remove. You can leave it attached if you're careful. Reach under the switch and feel for a button on the right front. Push it and the control knob should be released. Take the screws out of the black plastic cover that the knob stem went through. Release and pull the switch down. There are a couple of clips that need to be carefully pried loose while separating the switch from the connector. You may need to pry the switch off the connector with a screwdriver. Don't short anything. Plug in the new switch test it and re-assemble everything. If you really want to do the job right get some accessory relays and wire the relays into the headlight circuit to take the load off the switch and it will last for the life of the truck.
On the 3.7L it is located under hood, passenger side, lower engine area, mounted in oil filter adaptor. On the 5.2 & 5.9L it is located under hood, center, rear engine area, passenger side of distributor, mounted in engine block.
My 2000 D250 turbo diesel hesitates and all the gauges go crazy when it is shifting in to gear at around 60kms and 80kms. I had it in and they thought it maybe the air filter. It wasn't still going it.
