Each side of the engine has 4 cylinders, each cylinder has 2 electrical connections. One goes to the fuel injector which is pinched between the fuel rail and the cylinder head, the other goes to an oval-topped connector. This is the coil-on-plug coil.
The spark plugs are under the coils.

Remove the spark plug wires from your 2002 Mercury Grand Marquis spark plugs. Remove the spark plugs by turning them to the left with a deep well 5/8 socket. Reverse the process to install the new spark plugs.
there is a coil on each one. remove the coil and there is the plug.
look on the very top of the motor and you will see a long rail them are the spark injectors for your spark plugs. pull them injectors out and you will see your spark plugs.
Check the Vehicle Emission Control Information ( VECI ) decal located in the front of the engine compartment ( it will show the type of spark plugs to use and the spark plug gap )

Remove the coil on top of the plug, they are there.
You do not need to remove the fuel rail to remove the spark plugs.
Each spark plug has a coil on the top. Just remove the coil.
