it uses two chains and they both have painted links to make it easier. now the crankshaft key should be at 12oclock and the cams have two marks each. they have an arrow and a slash the arrow is the mark that goes to the painted link and the slash goes to a mark on the cilynder head this job is tricky even for an experience mechanic so if you never done mechanical work before be carefull here is another tip always turn your engine two full turns by hand after instaling a new timing chain or belt to ensure that the engine turns freely
align the cams to the E & I marks on cam. You will see notches right beside them. Align the crank with key way up.
just below the engine oil dip stick. It has and octagonal shape
You can try by vacuum- try to bring it to 20 Hg at idle, but a timing light is much more accurate
there are 20 marks in a score
There are 6 marks on the crank pulley, the first red line is 5°ATDC then white TDC then 5° BTDC and so on ending with the yellow 20°. (should be set to 20° BTDC.) These should be viewed from the drivers side of the car; align the marks with the pin protruding from the front cover.
Here is a link from a repair site i subscribe too. Hope it helps. It is an "Exploded" View of all the components for the timing stuff. http://www.ondemand5.com/mric/common/asp/ImageViewer.aspx?MOD=REPTIFF&MODULE_ID=1&SESSION_ID=%7BE80FA39E-8189-4681-B82C-6C58934EA88E%7D&IMAGE_GUID=90C10183&PRINT_BW=0&ARTICLE_TITLE=TIMING%20BELT%20REPLACEMENT%20-%202.0L%20&%202.3L%20-%201974-94%20EXCEPT%20PROBE&YEAR=1993&MAKE=Ford&MS_MODEL=Mustang%20LX&IMAGE_CAPTION=Fig.%201:%20Exploded%20View%20Of%20Timing%20Belt%20&%20Components%20(Typical)&COURTESYTAG=Courtesy%20of%20FORD%20MOTOR%20CO.& Most all timing marks are located on the harmonic balancer. A timing tab is located on the sheet metal that overhangs the balancer. Harmonic balancer is the lowest round device on an engine that has the belts running around it.
It will take you approximately 6 hours, if you keep the timing marks in place. Also, consider replacing water pump at same time, it takes about 20 minutes longer to do it as you replace the timing belt.
The engine is a push rod type and therefore requires no timing belt changes. (Not bad for a 20 year old eh!)
there are marks on the timing cover that remains attached to the block and there are arrows on the cams. there is a pointer down by gear on crank and a dimple on gear align these marks
looking at the timing marks from the top left to right you have 5 degrees after top dead center, then top dead center then 5 degres 10, 15 then 20 befor top dead center. the timing is 7 degrees before top dead center
Field service manual specifies 20 degrees btdc + or - 2 degrees
50/100 *20
