Aircraft landing lights are key to takeoff and landing, and should always be working and checked prior to takeoff. Replacement lights can be purchased from Amglo and XEVision.

What is a roller landing of the aircraft?

There is no term as a roller landing, however there is a term "roller" being replaced by "touch and go". This is where an aircraft comes into land but instead of stopping on the runway, it takes off again. This simulates a landing and a take off all in one maneuver.

Why do airplanes have lights?

For a few reasons. The lights are used when visibility is reduced or hindered for reasons including low-lighting (dusk or dawn), nighttime, fog and clouds, and rain or bad weather. The Landing lights illuminate the ground in front of the airplane during taxi, takeoff and landing so the pilot can see in front of the aircraft. The white Strobe lights are used so that other people and aircraft can see where the airplane is located when viewing from a distance. The Right-Of-Way lights are to help other aircraft know where the airplane is heading so they can avoid a possible collision. This is done by placing a green light on the right wing tip, a red light on the left wing tip and a white light on the tail of the airplane. By observing how these lights move and where they are in relation to one another it is possible to determine the orientation of the airplane and it's direction of travel.

Do aircraft dump fuel before landing?

Not normally. This is an emergency procedure sometimes done because the maximum takeoff weight is usually larger than the maximum landing weight on aircraft carrying large passenger or freight loads. The dumping of fuel is one action that can be used in an inflight emergency; however, I can guarantee that the takeoff weight of ANY aircraft (unless refueled in flight) is ALWAYS greater than said aircraft's landing weight. Fuel used enroute will always reduce the gross landing weight. Aircraft are generally serviced with enough fuel to make its primary destination and an alternate runway (due of emergency). The landing weight can be adjusted by dumping fuel (normally) in case of damage to the aircraft or destination runway conditions (snow/ice, rain) requiring a lighter aircraft gross landing weight. Naval aircraft operating from Carriers routinely dump fuel to adjust for landing conditions (wet deck, reduced landing area, slower ship speed into the wind, etc...).

What is the purpose of retracting landing gear's pivot?

When the landing gear retracts, it is very important for aerodynamics that they retract into the body of the aircraft as much as possible. However, placement of the landing gear depends ultimately on factors such as the aircraft's center of gravity, its weight, its possible fuel load and much more, there may not be a good locaction in the aircraft for the wheels to rectract fully without some kind of articulation. As a result, aircraft designers often must come up with some pretty interesting solutions to enable to landing gear to be retracted fully into a space that is otherwise unused in the aircraft. Often in order for the landing gear to retract into its well, the wheel trucks may have to be rotated or pivoted. Large aircraft in particular often have multiple wheels for each of the landing gear. It is particularly difficult to design a retraction system for these as the wheel trucks may be very large and ungainly. Some large aircraft have the ability to pivot the landing gear to one direction or another for landing. This is done to increase the aircraft's capacity to land in cross-winds. In a strong cross-wind the aircraft may not be able to land gracefully pointed straight down the runway, and so the landing gear may be off-set one direction or another to allow the aircraft to land with a slight crab-angle.

What is the maximum tempo or rate of landings and take offs on an aircraft carrier?

The maximum rate of take offs and landings (tempo) on an aircraft carrier is 2 takeoffs and one landing every 37 seconds during the daylight and one takeoff and landing every minute during nighttime.

How do you activate the lighting system on flight simulator x deluxe edition?

If your in one of the standrds aircraft pressing SHIFT and 5 will bring up the over head panel where all the lights switches are. If froma key board pressing Control and the ltter L will give you landing lights on and off ALL Lights on and off is just L Panel lights is shift and L Strobe is O

What is the difference between aircraft flight hours and flight cycles?

Flying hours are the number of hours that an aircraft has flown (usually from engine start to engine stop). One flight cycle is one flight from take-off to landing.

What are the key features of an airplane landing?

When landing an aircraft, there is usually a series of basic steps one must follow to achieve success. Locating the airport, contacting the tower, and identifying the runway to begin the landing approach are the first steps. Once this is accomplished, lining up the plane with the runway, lowering the landing gear, reducing speed and dropping elevation, while keeping the aircraft somewhat level, will usually ensure a successful landing. Once on the ground, taxiing off the runway completes the process.
