Depending on where you live in this world you can have any type of funeral you desire. Knowing that the Norse came from the extreme cold climate of Scandinavia, in ground burial would have to been very difficult to break through with the tools of the time. Therefore most were cremated atop funeral pyres and some even on funeral ships set ablaze and "sailed" out to open sea. However in modern times, the intentional sinking of anything is not without it's own legal burden.

The dead were placed atop the pyre and gifted items of his trade, Articles that would help him in the afterlife and items he was used to using. Fishing and Hunting, and Farming were the primary "trades" of the Vikings. Though history would have us think the Vikings were no more than world wide bullies.
