In sewing machines, you "get what you pay for" so it is often a mistake to buy a new, cheap sewing machine. The trick is to have someone else pay the premium price for a good machine and then pick it up used for a small portion of the original cost. Sources for no-cost machines are : your local Freecycle forum and the local landfill (don't laugh, I have picked up several machines there). Also, ask friends, neighbors, and relatives - they sometimes have Grandma's old sewing machine in a closet just wondering what to do with it. Low-price sources for sewing machines are thrift shops, local auctions, and yard sales. Machines from all these free and low-cost sources will probably require a professional cleaning and lubrication for about $50. Sewing machine dealers often take in trade-ins and resell them at reasonable prices. These machines are cleaned, oiled, and tested and sometimes even come with a short guarantee.

Most popular brands of embroidery machines today can be reached online. These brands have their official websites so you can view their embroidery machines and buy from their websites. You can also visit online shops or dealers which sell embroidery machines that are in cheaper prices. Find an online shop such as eBay or Amazon that sells these things in your local area. You can choose from brand new or second hand embroidery machines which are cheaper of course.

I have a Singer 7256 Fashion Mate. It does 70 different stitches, and it was about $150. There are other models that were less. I haven't had any problems with it at all, but I don't do anything on an industrial level. I have made quilts, curtains, skirts, pillows, and other things of that sort. It is easy to use and does a nice job.

While I was looking at which machine I wanted, I also came across others, such as some made by Brother that also appeared to be a good buy.

Look on your local Craig's List for sales of used items. If you don't find one for a sewing machine you like, post a notice requesting one.
