Windows 7 comes with an audio recorder made by Microsoft. It can be accessed by searching Sound Recorder in the start menu although better software called Audacity can be downloaded from the link in the Related Links Area.
http://applian.com/sound-recorder/ is the best thing i found. It's a toolbar on the browser that you can press record and so far it works with movie sounds but not music on Windows Media Player. It also has radio stations on it too which is nifty. I got songs to record when i played them off Goldwave though so maybe it'll work for other programs too. It does add some cracking sounds in unless you turn up the bitrate in settings but its best thing I've found for vista. Hope that helped.
There are many different free downloads for recording sound. A few are listed in the "Related Links" section below.
you could try moviecodec.com
Windows 7 has a program built in which can record audio. It is found by clicking the Start Menu -> Accessories-> Sound Recorder. If you feel like that isn't enough, you could try Audacity, which is freeware and has many more options for editing while the sound recorder in Windows 7 does not.
You can download Windows 7 from related links. Big download though!
