If you want a pedigree Basset Hound from a respected breeder, you should contact the Kennel Club or look on their website to find Basset Hound breeders in your area. Never buy a puppy without seeing at least the mother and where the puppies were kept.

Are hounds good with children?

Basset hounds made ideal pets for families with children. They are gentle, tolerant and welcoming animals. Basset hounds get along well with other pets and are seldom aggressive to strangers. Basset hounds need daily walks, but children need to be careful when walking them because they are hunting dogs and if they get a whiff of a certain scent they may pull at the leash and a young child may have difficulty controlling them. Since basset hounds are low to the ground, young children may try to ride on their backs - this should be avoided at all costs. Basset hounds would make a good pet for a family with children, but be prepared for lots of drool, shedding and stubbornness!

How do you know if you have a beagle or a beagle basset?

By not getting the dog from a reputable breeder. Characteristics can be fooling! Check out the breeders backround, then you are certain. 3 generation background would be wonderful. Then write the check! A call to the AKC would be a good way to check what breed of dog you are getting !! We have had 62 Basset Hounds. I'feel strongley on my comments. I hope this helps to answer this question. Thanks, Cathy Jarvis, Maine

Should you get basset hound or a beagle?

Well basset hounds are good with kids, their ears and feet need to be frequently cleaned, they are very quiet, trips people a lot(since they're so short) and they weigh only up to about 30 pounds. While beagles are usually loud, taller than a basset hound, energetic( sometimes good sometimes bad), and have a good sense of smell. If you like huge ears, a kid friendly, and a quiet dog, you should get a basset If you like floppy ears, tallness, and a energetic dog, you should choose the beagle Hope this helped! :)

How can I find a reputable yorkies breeder in California?

The best way to find a reputable Yorkie breeder in California is to get a referral, interview and visit the breeder and interact with animals. Good breeders won't sell a dog to anyone who comes along with the money.

What were basset hounds bred for?

The Basset Hound comes from France. They were originally owned and bred by members of the French Nobility in the 1500s. In the 1700s, after the French Revolution, commoners started to hunt with the Basset Hounds for hunting. They were bred to hunt small animals such as badgers, rabbits, and hares. The Basset Hound belongs to the Scent Hound group of dogs. Their sense of tracking is only second to the Bloodhound. They have large noses with open nostrils and their loose lips that allow them to pick up scent particles and follow the trail of animals. They have long ears which help keep the scent of their prey close to their nose. Basset Hounds have been selectively bred to produce small legs to allow man to easily follow them on foot, or to produce longer legs for man to keep up with them on horseback.
