There is an electrical cable consisting of 3 wires on the 1992 A4LD. Check to make sure all 3 of these wires are intact, and working. My gray one was snipped on my 1992 A4LD, and after reconnecting it, it worked fine.
it's either the AOD or the A4LD........... the way to tell this is the count the number of bolts on the transmission pan....18 bolts, it's the A4LD........ 14 bolts it's the AOD
a 3.0 lt will fit you just have to change the bell houseing
The fuse for the solenoid that shifts the A4LD automatic transmission from 3rd gear to 4th gear (overdrive), in Aerostar vans is a fusable link within the cable bundle that is aside the battery next to the driver's side inner fender. If it has opened due to a short in the solenoid or the wires leading to it you may see visible signs of the disruption by a change in the plastic insulation covering the link.
On the Ford A4LD automatic transmission the modulator valve is on the passenger side of the transmission ( it might be behind a heat shield )
A4LD transmissions were installed in ford aerostars , rangers and explorers
It is possible to fit an M5R1 in place of an A4LD engine. This can be done with certain modifications.

hate to burst your bubble. but the A4LD is the only thing that will fit in your van..Ford only made a few other differant styles that year in Rear wheel drive. And all of those are too big.. Unless you are wanting to switch to a standard transmission for it.. But that's alot of work.. Macs Transmissions (Houston, TX)281-394-4951Macstransmissions@gmail.com
