The two genres that do not follow the basic triangle plot pattern are fantasy and science fiction. They can often omit one or more parts or even have multiple parts in the triangle plot pattern because of their surrealistic subject matter.
When you plot a point you are using coordinates to find a certain point on a grid. In fiction, a plot point is an event in the exposition which will have ramifications later in the story.
You usually read to find out who, what, when, where, and why - who are the characters, what's going on, when did it happen, where did it happen, and why.
