You typically find snails in leaf matter, under rotting wood, or other similar locations during the night. Everything depends on your region. I live in South Florida, and I believe we have apple snails here. They're nocturnal, and I'll often wake up to find small slime trails on the concrete path in front of my home. Very rarely I will see a snail or a slug appear during the daytime.
