The savage model 3 or 1903 as it is refered to was made by savage arms company from 1903-1922.it was made in 5 different grades.The standard slide action,the grade EF which had B grade checkering on fancy english walnut stock,with a savage #22B front sight and #21B micrometer open rear sight.The expert grade had A grade engraving on the receiver,and B grade checkering on fancy walnut stock.The grade GH which had A grade checkering on a plain walnut stock,no engraving with the above listed sights.The gold medal model had animal ornamentation on receiver,less elaborate checkering on plain walnut stock,and standard sights. If you are asking about the savage No.3 then these were made from 1931-1945 by savage,with a total production of 121,000 guns made.

I just inherited my Dads J.C. Higgins Model 50 583.91 and I can remember saving my money,along with my brothers,and mother to get him that gun. We bought it in 1950 for 88.00 dollars, To answer your question ,no it did not have any frills no engraving no cheek plate,it didnt even have a recoil pad. How old are J Stevens rifles?
J. Stevens and Company was formed in 1864 and used that name until 1886 when the name was changed to J. Stevens Arms and Tool Company. The plant was sold to New England Westinghouse in 1916 and used to produce military rifles for the US and the Soviet Union. In 1920, Savage purchased the facilities and manufactured firearms with the name J. Stevens Arms Company until about 1948. Guns produced after that date were marked with just "Stevens" until the name was discontinued by Savage in 1991. Many Stevens guns were not serialized, so they can only be "dated" to the period of production. Savage Arms no longer answers questions about old Stevens guns. Addition to answers: Savage marketed a reproduction of the early, and very popular, "boy's" rifles of the late 19th-early 20th century. This was known primarily as the Stevens Favorite and the new reproduction, single shot rifle came out in 1971 as the Model 71. It was also subsequently made as the Model 72 and Model 74 with some slight variations. Now it has come back again as of about 1998 as the Model 30G in .22 Long Rifle, as the Model 30GM in .22 Magnum, and in some Model number in caliber .17 HMR. When was the Savage .22 caliber bolt action rifle Model 5 made?
I can't tell you the exact manufacturing dates (from 19XX to 19XX) but my dad gave me a Model 5 when I was 8 years old (that would have been in 1964). Back then, millions of young kids had rifles... yet there were never any incidents with school shootings or mass killings. Kids didn't learn how to do that until the video game industry taught them how. I've been looking for a Savage Model 5 for years, to replace the one I had when I was a kid, and have yet to see one. They were just simple, utilitarian .22 rifles, and not expensive or high-end... but there doesn't seem to be very many out there. ------------------------------------------------ April 2011 I posted the above some time ago. Since then, I've found (and bought) two Savage Model 5's, and have done quite a bit more research. The first Model 5 appeared in 1936. Early models had a simple steel plate trigger guard. In the late 1930's, the Model 3, 4 and 5 were made with cast metal, painted trigger guards. I don't think any rifles were made during the war years, as Savage was quite busy making heavy machine guns for Uncle Sam. In either case, they didn't publish any catalogs. After WWII, rifle manufacturing resumed. The Model 5 last appeared in the 1960 catalog.
