There are no foremost Universities or colleges that carry a specific major in the study of symbols and their meanings, that I know of. Social Anthropology and Archeology both have focuses in that area of study in the upper division and graduate courses. Some art history courses cover this as well. If you are serious about the study of symbols, particularly within their religious context, a majority of the Jesuit universities have some concentration on these topics. Most universities, at the graduate and doctorate levels, will allow you to create a focus if you can prove a strong enough case. Start with an undergrad in some social science and move from there. Check out Brooks University at Oxford and Baylor in Texas. If you decide to do some research into Baylor, try to get in contact with a Dr. Van Auken.
