The American Appaloosa was developed by the Nez Perce tribe of the Pacific Northwest. They selectively bred and culled their herds of horses until they got a horse that was enduring, tough, and colorful, they were built similarly to the Thoroughbred. After the tribe surrendered the US Army destroyed much of the tribes herd and crossed many others with draft horses. Some ranchers liked the spotted horses and tried to save them. They bred some to Arabians, Thoroughbreds and Quarter Horses in an effort to bulk up the numbers, but in doing so change the breed completely.
