Balboa explored South America and Central America, and crossed the Isthmus of Panama. (An isthmus is a narrow piece of land connecting two larger bodies of land.) On the other side, he "discovered" the Pacific Ocean for Europeans. He and his soldiers were the first Europeans to see the Pacific Ocean from the Americas.
