It hasn't been proven, but there is speculation that Christopher Columbus' voyages were responsible for introducing syphilis to Europe and small pox to the new world.

The people of Columbus' time had no understanding of what causes disease or how diseases are transmitted. As a result, Columbus could not have done anything to prevent the exchange of diseases between the Taino and Europeans.Of course, if he had had modern knowledge of disease, there is a lot that could have been done. But he did not have that knowledge.

There were a number of diseases that followed Spanish colonization of the Americas, one of the most devastating of which was small pox. Whether this came with Columbus or later is not known. Conversely, many believe that Columbus' crew brought syphilis back to Europe on their return from the Americas.
Columbus gave the Hispanola Native Americans disease. He came from the old world and with him came diseases and the Native Americans had no immunity to these diseases. Other than that he opened the door to other European explorers.
