It is believed that they date back to 36 A.D. in Greece, because they are scribed on Greek money dating from that period. They have nothing to do with Denmark, even though they are Great Danes.

The Great Dane may have originated from a mastiff-like dog that was present in England during the 1500s. The Greeks, Romans and Persians also kept these mastiff-like dogs. Other theories defend the belief that the Tibetan Mastiff figures as strongly in the Danes background as the English-type mastiffs. Like those of many other breeds, the Great Danes origin is not entirely clear. There is no formal documentation that can definatively state its origins and development.
