The Greek theatre - the original theatre as we know it in Western Civilization - grew out of the religious ceremonies of the Greeks. These ecstatic rituals eventually included choral speaking sections that famously evolved when Thespis first stepped out of the crowd and created dialogue by speaking separately from the chorus.
It began with people dancing for the gods in a dancing floor made in forest glades. This was then transferred to dancing floors in cities, then an actor was added to narrate the story being told, then a second actor, then a third. The chorus was retained to sing and dance a background and commentary to the story being told by the actors.
This was further developed to a five-play format - three inter-connected dramas, a filthy-funny satyr play to clear the audience's mind from the weight of the dramas, and finally a political comedy to send the audience home enlightened, cleansed and refreshed by the day's proceedings.
