Nichols' body was discovered in the early morning hours of August 31, 1888, on a small cobbled street named Buck's Row, which ran parallel to Whitechapel Rd., in London's Whitechapel district.

It was Mary Nichols murdered on August 31st 1888. Her body was found on Durward Street now named Bucks Row.
From what is left of evidence and the autopsy notes, the Ripper most likely cut the victim's throat from behind, cutting the neck from left to right. This made it impossible for her to scream and with her attacker behind her it made it very difficult to defend herself. At this point she was lowered to the ground and then, when she was completely helpless, her killer repeatedly stabbed her in the chest and abdomin, and before leaving her, she was disembowelled.

It is presumed 'Jack' used a knife.
Jack killed 30 September 1888.
It is very difficult to determine certain aspects of a killer when he was never caught or identified. For over 100 years it was commonly thought that the killer known as Jack The Ripper killed for the first time when he killed Mary Ann (Polly) Nichols on August 31, 1888, but is now generally accepted that Nichols was not the Ripper's first victim and possibly not even his second. Martha Tabram, found murdered in the early morning hours of August 6-7, 1888, was almost surely JTR's victim also. Whether he killed prior to Tabram's murder we may never know, but it is safe to say that his crimes began in earnest in 1888.
