In 1979, in Jacksonville, FL, the Jamis Bicycle Company started up and reintroduced the classic beach cruiser to the market. Jamis cruisers were an instant overnight success. The Boss cruiser was easily the best selling beach cruiser in Florida in the 80's. In 1983, Jamis expanded to mountain bikes and won a number of awards and positive reviews for providing quality bikes that wouldn't break the bank. In 1985, Jamis released their first competition ready mountain bike, the Dakar. In 1990, bicycle distributor G. Joannou Cycle Company of Northvale, NJ purchased the Jamis Bicycle Company.
