His wife died soon after he left office. He made a long tour of the South and Midwest, then went to Europe for over a year. While he was in Europe, in 1855, he was nominated for President by the American (Know-nothing) party. He accepted the nomination and came back to campaign. He won 21% of the vote and carried one state, Maryland. He remarried two year later to a wealthy widow in Buffalo and was active in civic affairs in Buffalo. He died in 1874.
