The exact location of his birth and the location of his own village is unknown, but it was somewhere in the area where Philadelphia was later established. Perhaps it was at or near the Delaware village of Shackamaxon.

Even his name is a matter of debate, since it was variously recorded as Tammany, Tamenend, Tamammend, Tamanend and many other spellings - said to mean "agreeable" in the Lenni-Lenape (Delaware) language.
