The names of Spanish ships were traditionally the names of Saints, but then the ships were usually nicknamed. Santa Maria is Spanish for Saint Mary or the Virgin Mary. Niña and Pinta are both nicknames. The real name of the Niña is the Santa Clara, or Saint Clare, who was one of the first followers of Saint Francis. The actual name of the Pinta remains unknown.

The Nina, the Pinta and the Santa Maria were the three ships that Columbus had in his fleet when he set out to find a faster route to India and China from Spain. He bought the ships with funds provided to him by the King and Queen of Spain.

The carrack Santa Maria was renamed from its original name "La Gallega" ("the Galician"). Santa Maria means "Saint Mary" in Spanish, and that was its name at the time of Columbus' voyage.

In those days it was customary to give ships nicknames and "La Nina" ("the Little Girl") was called this way because of the Nino brothers, which owned the ship. But its real name was Santa Clara ("Saint Claire" in Spanish). It received its name from a convent that still exists in Moguer, Spain, where the Nino brothers lived and where the ship was built.

In those days ships and places discovered by Catholic explorers received names of Catholic Saints so most probably that was the case with the ship Pinta ("painted", in Spanish). Unfortunately its real name is unknown today.
