St. Augustine grew up in Thagaste in northern Africa. Thagaste is a small town outside of city of Hippo.
Saint Augustine of Hippo grew up in Thagaste, a city in the Roman province of Numidia (modern-day Algeria). He later moved to Carthage for his education and eventually settled in Rome and Milan before his conversion to Christianity.
Saint Augustine of Hippo became a saint due to his significant contributions to Christian theology and philosophy. He was a prolific writer whose works influenced Christian thought for centuries. Additionally, his life of repentance and conversion from a previous life of sin is also celebrated in the Catholic Church.
I can find no reliable source that mentions the name of Augustine's concubine. However, a recently released movie on the life of Saint Augustine, Restless Heart, calls her Khalida. I suspect this was an invention of the screen writer so that she had a name in the movie besides "Hey You." After she was abandoned by Augustine, his mother Monica arranged a marriage for him but the future bride, at the time, was not of the legal age to marry. Augustine shortly broke off the engagement and had another fling or two with other concubines before he finally converted to Catholicism and was baptized by Saint Ambrose. He never did marry but some consider his nearly 14 year relationship with 'Khalida' to have been a common law marriage.
Saint Augustine of Hippo became a saint due to his influential writings, particularly his philosophical and theological works that have had a lasting impact on Christian thought. Additionally, his conversion from a life of indulgence and immorality to one of devotion and service to God is seen as a powerful example of repentance and transformation. His profound teachings on topics such as grace, sin, and the nature of God have continued to inspire and guide believers for centuries.

Why not pick up St. Augustine's City of God, and find out from the man himself?
The philosopher, theologian, and saint, Augustine of Hippo, has meant much to the Christian West for quite a few important reasons, including his dedicated service to the Church as a bishop (in a very difficult time) and his prolific writings. Perhaps above all, however, Augustine was an extraordinarily honest man: he opened up his life, good and bad and otherwise, for all to see and to learn from, especially through the book that has become a Christian classic, "The Confessions."

St. Augustine of hippo was a martyr. Infact, he was martyred during the Great Christian Persecution. This was a time when the growth and expanding of Christianity throughout the Roman Empire threatened the Romans because they refused to honor the emperor. To get rid of this problem, the Romans persecuted the Christians or made them renounce their faith and force them to become a citizen, which most followed through with. St. Augustine of Hippo was different though. When he stood in the middle of the dry, dusty dirt floor, he looked up to the Heavens. He embraced the fact that he was going to die for his faith because it was an honor, though most feared it at the time. The crowd loved St. Augustine so when he looked up to the Heavens it was hard to let the Romans go through and kill him. The crowed jeered at the soldiers to set him free, but the soldiers released the famished tigers from their cage. They devoured Augustine and other faithful martyrs. St. Augustine of Hippo was very faithful, trusting and plucky. He is a great example of faith in our God.
