St. James the Greater lived near the sea of Galilee where Jesus came to live. Jesus called him and his brother John, from being fishermen to follow Him as His disciples. They were "in a ship with Zebedee their father, mending their nets; and he called them. And they immediately left the ship and their father, and followed him." Matthew 4:21,22. Jesus also called the fishermen, Andrew and his brother Peter, telling them: "Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men."

James, the son of Zebedee, was also known as James the Greater for coming to Christ before James the Lesser, lived in Capernaum, by the sea of Galilee. Matthew 4:13. He was executed by Herod Agrippa I, around 44 A.D. "Now about that time Herod the king stretched forth his hands to vex certain of the church. And he killed James the brother of John with the sword." Acts12:1,2.

There is legend of James the Greater went to Spain to preach before being martyred, yet there is no evidence within, nor outside the Scriptures that this occurred. also, Paul had indicated a desire to go to Spain, whereas his policy was to not go where other apostles had gone.

James may have been born in Bethsaida or in that general area of Galilee as he and his brother John were fishermen from there.
