In 1959, as the Quarry Men, they started playing at the Casbah Club in Liverpool which was run by Pete Best's mother. In 1960, as The Beatles, and with Pete Best as drummer, the played at the Indra Club in Hamburg for 48 nights, then at the Kaiserkeller for a further 58 nights. On their return to Liverpool, they play at the Cavern Club, followed by a return to Hamburg at the Top Ten Club, then back to the Cavern Club which is where Brian Epstein sees the Beatles for the first time, and the rest is history.

Like most songwriters, the Beatles were mainly inspired by the things around them. Occasionally, Lennon and McCartney both had to write "to order" to have enough songs for a particular project; A Hard Day's Night and Girl (both by Lennon) fall into this catagory. Lennon, in particular, could draw inspiration from many sources - a newspaper column inspired A Day in the Life, a TV commercial was behind Good Morning, Good Morning. McCartney seems to be more likely to be inspired by other songs; Here, There and Everywhere was his response to hearing God Only Knows by The Beach Boys.

By the time of the White album both Lennon and McCartney were taking inspiration in everything around them.

They liked a lot of 50's/60's bands. Many of their covers were of classic Chuck Berry, Little Richard and other early rock and roll songs.
