His name at birth was Hiram Ulysses Grant. He later changed it to Ulysses Hiram Grant. He just changed the first and middle names order. He was a good president. His name got spelled wrong on a application to go to West Point and he was forced to change his name to go to West Point. The made up S is for his mother's middle name, Simpson.
High School is a post Civil War concept, and Middle School is a post WWII concept (they used to be Junior High Schools). Grant's father was a tanner (leather maker) and his family lived on the frontier, and Grant was working regularly by the time he was eight. Schools were held for about four months in the winter, after the crops were in, before time to plow and plant in the spring. Grant made the most of his scant education and was very good at math.
Ulysses S. Grant would go outside and ride his horse, or dog named Lucky! :D
His father asked a senator he knew to fill out the paperwork so Ulysses could go to West Point. Because this senator didn't take time to ask he wrote Ulysses's name down wrong as Ulysses S. Grant. His real name was Hiram Ulysses Grant.

If you go to Google.com and search Ulysses S. Grant and then press images at the top it will show you a gallery of pictures! Hope I helped(;
Grant's real name was Hiram Ulysses Grant. However, when he was nominated for West Point, the Congressman who nominated him, wrote his name as Ulysses S. Grant, presumably thinking his middle name was Simpson, which was his mother's maiden name. He never corrected his name with West Point, was commissioned as Ulysses S.Grant and that became his official army name. Maybe he did not like is old initials of HUG.
