Since the Alaska Earthquake in 1964 and the resulting Tsunami, the West Coast of the USA has had a Tsunami early warning system with emergency evacuation plans. There have been a couple of alarms from earthquakes, but no significant waves.
Unfortunately, due to human nature, many people flocked to the coast after recent tsunami warnings.
The most recent Tsunami to hit Japan was in March of 2011.
