The legend of Bloody Mary has many variations. Some tell a story of a witch that stole local daughters to make herself beautiful and young again, who was then later caught and burned at a stake during which she cursed the town saying that if they called her name in front of a mirror she would return to kill them.

Others tell of a beautiful girl, Mary Worth, horribly disfigured by a car crash. She wasn't allowed to see herself because people thought she would loose her mind. One night she sneaked into the bathroom and was so horrified by what she saw that she crawled into the mirror to find her old image. And that if you call for her she will come out and kill you dooming your soul to be trapped in that mirror forever.

Truth being that there was someone called Bloody Mary. Mary I was once the queen of England. She killed many, many people during her reign. She also had false pregnancy problems. And some say she used to bathe in blood to continue looking young.

There aren't enough facts to determine exactly where the Bloody Mary legend originated, but there are many theories.
