In the Golden Age of Athens, plays were created, near the same time as the Olympics. To express emotion, the actors did not have enough time to change their whole outfit, so they changed their elaborate masks to show emotion for that scene. The classic mask, with a smile and frown came from the fact that their were only two types of plays, comedy and tragedies; in other words, laughing/happy, shock/sadness/pity.

Where did comedy and tragedy masks come from?

Ancient Greece. Very true. The faces were contorted to the extreme so that the audiences could fully understand the emotion being portrayed from great distances. Also, some of the masks actually had a type of megaphone built into the mouth piece to help the actor project his voice.
