It happened when Pharaoh sent the people out that gcd didn't lead them toward
the land of the Philistines ... the short way ... because gcd said "In case the people
reconsider the whole exodus when they see war, and they'll return to Egypt". So he
turned the people toward the way of the desert, toward the Sea of Reeds and the
Sinai Desert. Gcd went before them during the day in a pillar of cloud to lead them on
the way, and at night in a pillar of fire to give them light so that they could travel day
and night. He didn't remove the pillar of cloud by day or the pillar of fire by night from
before the people.
As you can see, Moses didn't have much to say about the choice of the route.
The Hebrew slaves stayed in Egypt, and didn't go anywhere. When they were
no longer slaves, they traveled toward the Red Sea and, after crossing it, into
the Sinai Desert. They followed alternate day and night pillars of cloud and fire
that led them on the preferred route, with Moses as military and administrative
authority.
Ultimately, to just outside what would eventually become Israel.
For about forty years, though, he took them round and round in the desert.
Into the Holy Land (Numbers ch.34).

The greatest prophet in Judaism was Moses.
The Jews did like Moses, and they still do. Moses gave them freedom. If he hadn't done anything, Israel would probably still be under captivity and may not have had the freedom they have now.
