Scurvy is caused by the lack of vitamin C. It was a problem for sailors at sea because of the limited diet the had with no fresh fruit and vegetables. Citrus fruit was introduced into the Royal Navy to combat this. At first with lemons and the it changed to limes because they were cheaper. This is the origin of the term "Limeys".

You can get scurvy almost anywhere, especially where there are no supply of Oranges, grapefruits, etc. Scurvy is caused by a lack of vitamin c, and was most common among sailors and pirates who were out at sea for long periods of time; without fresh citrus fruits. Later on they discovered this, and pirates stated to put a small portion of their money towards citrus.

Scurvy doesn't come from anywhere, but if you don't eat stuff with vitamin C in it, you will get Scurvy.
